BOSIET is OPITO's oil-and-gas offshore induction; GWO Sea Survival is the wind industry's standard. What each covers, validity periods, and when a crew needs both.

BOSIET — Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training — is the OPITO-standardised safety induction for the offshore oil and gas industry. It is aimed, in OPITO's own words, at personnel "new (or returning) to the offshore oil and gas industry" who travel to installations by helicopter, and it bundles helicopter escape, sea survival, first aid and firefighting into roughly three days of training, valid for four years. GWO Sea Survival is something different: one module of the Global Wind Organisation's Basic Safety Training (BST), the safety standard developed by and for the wind industry, built around vessel transfer to turbines and valid for 24 months.
For offshore wind, the short answer is: GWO Basic Safety Training — including the Sea Survival module for anyone working offshore — is the qualification the wind industry recognises. BOSIET is neither a substitute for it under the published GWO standard, nor made redundant by it: a workforce that also flies to far-offshore sites by helicopter, or that moves between oil and gas and wind, may well need OPITO training on top.
The rest of this article sets out what each standard actually contains, how the two compare on validity and content, what wind employers require in practice, and where the medical fitness requirements behind both regimes differ. It is written for HSE and crewing managers deciding what to book — not to sell either course.
BOSIET is a training standard owned by OPITO, the offshore energy skills body, and delivered worldwide through OPITO-approved centres. It exists in two main variants defined by the emergency breathing system used during helicopter travel: BOSIET with EBS (rebreather system, OPITO course code 5700) and BOSIET with CA-EBS (compressed air system, code 5750). Tropical variants — TBOSIET and TFOET — exist for warm-water regions, and OPITO also publishes a Tropical HUET standard.
The standard comprises four mandatory units: a safety induction covering offshore hazards and regulations (delivered entirely as theory), helicopter safety and escape — the HUET element, practised with the emergency breathing system — sea survival and first aid, and firefighting with self-rescue. Total contact time is 21 hours for the EBS version and 20 hours 40 minutes for the CA-EBS version, with roughly 40% theory and 60% practical outside the induction unit; training providers typically deliver it over three days.
Validity works on a four-year cycle: OPITO sets a maximum four-year interval between completing BOSIET and completing the FOET refresher (Further Offshore Emergency Training, code 5858 for the EBS variant). FOET is a single day — eight hours including introduction — covering three units: helicopter emergency procedures, firefighting and first aid. Entry to FOET requires a valid, in-date OPITO certificate; once a BOSIET lapses, the full course must be retaken.
The Global Wind Organisation is "a non-profit industry association representing leading wind turbine manufacturers, renewable energy operators and independent service providers". Its Basic Safety Training standard covers five subjects — First Aid, Manual Handling, Fire Awareness, Working at Heights and Sea Survival — and states plainly: "To enable participants to work in the offshore environment, an additional GWO Sea Survival Module training shall be completed." Onshore technicians can stop at four subjects; offshore technicians cannot.
The Sea Survival module aims to give participants "the ability to act safely and responsibly and to take the correct preventive actions in all aspects of offshore operations from shore to installation vessel (or WTG) and vice versa". Its contact time — 7 hours 25 minutes under the current BST V20, effective March 2026, which added a walk-to-work lesson on motion-compensated gangways — covers cold-water immersion (cold shock, hypothermia, drowning, sea sickness), lifesaving appliances and PPE, search and rescue and GMDSS, man-overboard procedures, and — the heart of the module — safe transfer: hazards of different transfer types, transfer vessels, and a practical exercise transferring between a crew transfer vessel and a wind turbine transition piece. The wet practical includes controlled entry into the water from a transition-piece ladder, swimming techniques and life raft use.
Every BST module, Sea Survival included, is valid for 24 months. Validity is calculated automatically in WINDA, GWO's training records database, and a record "can be renewed up to two months prior to expiry" while keeping the original certification date. Renewal is via the shorter refresher training for each module — since V20 defined within the BST standard itself rather than a separate refresher standard; if a record expires, the standard is unambiguous — the participant "must attend the applicable BST module(s) training(s) to obtain a new training record". GWO reports a trained workforce of more than 190,000 people, with certified training providers in 55 countries.
The two standards are not rival versions of the same course. BOSIET is a full offshore induction built around a helicopter ditching scenario; GWO Sea Survival is a focused module built around vessel transfer and immersion, sitting inside a broader wind-specific training package that separately covers first aid, fire, manual handling and working at height. The comparison below shows where they genuinely differ.

GWO training is the wind industry's own currency. The standards are agreed by GWO member companies — the turbine manufacturers and operators themselves — and recommended for renewable energy technicians across construction, installation, operations and maintenance. In practice that recommendation hardens into a contractual condition: recruiters in the sector describe GWO certificates as what "most employers demand … as a minimum requirement", and a technician without a valid WINDA record for Sea Survival will generally not board a CTV to an offshore site.
Crucially, neither published standard recognises the other. The GWO Basic Safety Training standard contains no exemption or bridging route for BOSIET holders — its only stated path for anyone without a valid GWO record is to take the module in full. In the other direction, OPITO's FOET entry requirements accept only OPITO qualifications (BOSIET, TBOSIET, FOET and their variants), not GWO records. A crewing manager should therefore assume the certificates do not transfer: an experienced oil-and-gas hand with an in-date BOSIET still needs GWO Sea Survival before working a wind site that specifies GWO training, and a wind technician moving to a drilling rig needs BOSIET.
OPITO itself has acknowledged the overlap rather than disputed it. It has launched a suite of renewable-energy products — including a BOSIET for Renewable Energy (Wind) with "full access" and "limited access" tiers matched to whether personnel go beyond the transition piece into tower and nacelle, and a transition standard for oil-and-gas workers entering wind, which its CEO described as "enabling workers to move across the energy sector with greater ease". OPITO's wind BOSIET carries four-year validity, and these products are a separate pathway from GWO's — which standard governs a given site remains the operator's contractual choice, so check the site's training matrix before booking anything.
The GWO Sea Survival module assumes vessel transfer. It contains no helicopter escape training — and helicopters are no longer exotic in wind. OPITO notes that "within the growing market of offshore renewable energy projects, operations are executed within deep waters and crew transfers are now often made via helicopter as opposed to exclusively by boat". Where a wind farm uses helicopter transfer or hoisting, operators typically specify helicopter escape training on top of GWO BST — and OPITO has updated its HUET standard so that it can be delivered as a standalone course, in EBS, CA-EBS and tropical variants, precisely so that training centres can serve energy workers who do not need the full BOSIET.
The second common trigger is a mixed portfolio. Contractors whose technicians rotate between oil-and-gas installations and wind farms — vessel crews, inspection teams, commissioning specialists — end up maintaining both card sets in parallel: a four-year OPITO cycle and a 24-month GWO cycle, with different refresher bookings, different record systems and different medical gates. That is an administrative burden worth planning deliberately rather than discovering at mobilisation, because the shorter GWO cycle is the one that lapses first.
Both regimes gate physically demanding training — pool exercises, smoke, climbing — behind a fitness check, but they do it very differently. OPITO requires BOSIET and FOET participants to hold a valid offshore medical certificate or an accepted equivalent (an employer-approved medical, a certificate of fitness to work at sea, or a diving medical), or to complete a medical screening form issued by the training centre. GWO, by contrast, mandates no examination: its Requirements for Training oblige providers to ensure participants "shall be medically fit, appear well-rested and be capable of fully participating", and to collect a signed statement of medical fitness — a medical self-assessment — before training starts. If doubt arises, the provider must pause the training and seek advice from a qualified person or physician before continuing.
For an HSE or crewing manager the practical point is that a GWO card is not evidence of a medical examination, and an offshore training medical is not the same as an offshore work medical. What screening a technician needs to work offshore — as opposed to train — is set by the employer, the site operator and, where applicable, flag-state or national rules, and those regimes do not align neatly across oil and gas, wind and maritime crews. Mapping which of your people are covered by which medical standard, and who reviews the borderline cases, is worth the same deliberate attention as the training matrix itself — ideally with clinical input from whoever provides your offshore medical cover, before certificates and mobilisation dates start colliding.
