What GWO training includes: all five BST modules with hours under V20, the 24-month refresher cycle, WINDA verification and the wider standards portfolio.

GWO training is safety and technical training delivered to standards published by the Global Wind Organisation — a non-profit industry association representing wind turbine manufacturers, renewable energy operators and service providers. GWO writes and maintains the standards but does not run the courses itself; delivery is by GWO certified training providers. GWO's homepage reports aggregate figures of more than 190,000 trained people and 600 training locations, while its 2025 Annual Report uses annual measures — 140,544 participants trained during 2025 and 636 Training Providers at year end. These figures describe different populations and should not be treated as interchangeable. Completed training is represented in WINDA against each participant's personal ID.
The core of the system is Basic Safety Training (BST) — five modules covering first aid, manual handling, fire awareness, working at height and sea survival. GWO records are widely specified as contractual requirements by member companies and offshore wind operators, but they are not a universal legal licence or sufficient authorisation for every role and site. Around BST sits a wider portfolio for technical skills, advanced rescue, enhanced first aid, hazardous energies, blade repair, lifting operations and more, each with its own scope, prerequisites and validity rules.
This guide walks through the whole landscape module by module: what each BST module contains and how long it takes under the current standard, how the 24-month refresher cycle works, what the further GWO courses add, how certification is verified in WINDA — and what GWO certification does not cover. It is written for HSE and crewing managers building a training matrix, and for anyone trying to work out what "GWO certified" on a CV or a contract clause actually means.
The current Basic Safety Training standard is BST V20, effective 10 March 2026, with V19 accepted through a grace period to 10 September 2026. It contains five modules, each with initial and refresher training. The common onshore BST package uses First Aid, Manual Handling, Fire Awareness and Working at Height; Sea Survival is added to enable offshore work. The exact modules a person needs remain an employer and operator decision based on role, site and applicable rules — limited-access visitors and other specialist roles may follow a different matrix. The four-module package totals 28 hours 20 minutes of contact time and all five total 35 hours 45 minutes. With contact time capped at eight hours a day, delivery of all five requires at least four full days plus additional time.
First Aid (7 hours initial, 4-hour refresher) trains basic lifesaving first aid to a primary-survey structure — and, deliberately, trains participants to recognise their limitations as basic first aiders and call for help. Manual Handling (3 hours 45 minutes initial, 3-hour refresher) covers injury risk, manual handling principles and practical safe lifting and load handling in wind-turbine working environments. Fire Awareness (3 hours 20 minutes initial, 3-hour refresher) covers fire behaviour and spread, prevention, extinguishing methods and the firefighting equipment found in wind turbine generators, with scenario-based practice.
Working at Height is the largest module at 14 hours 15 minutes initial and 7 hours 30 minutes refresher: legislation, harness use, fall prevention and fall arrest systems, fall arrest lanyards and self-retracting lifelines, dropped-object prevention, emergency procedures, and rescue devices with practical rescue exercises. Sea Survival (7 hours 25 minutes initial, 4 hours 30 minutes refresher) covers cold-water immersion, lifesaving appliances, search and rescue and GMDSS, man-overboard procedures and — its core — safe transfer between crew transfer vessel and turbine, including a wet practical; V20 added a lesson on walk-to-work transfer via motion-compensated gangways. Every BST module is valid for 24 months, and since V20 the refresher requirements are defined within the BST standard itself rather than in a separate refresher standard — the standalone BST Refresher standard remains published only for the duration of the V19 grace period. GWO's own guidance is explicit about which standards carry the cycle: "The following training standards require refresher training every two years in order for the certification to remain valid: Basic Safety Training, Enhanced First Aid, Advanced Rescue Training, Control of Hazardous Energies."
The mechanics reward planning. A record "can be renewed up to two months prior to expiry" while keeping its original certification date — refresh earlier than that and the record simply carries the new date. Let a record lapse, however, and the shorter refresher is no longer available: in GWO's words, "if a training is allowed to expire, the full version of the course must be taken." For a crewing manager the difference is concrete — a lapsed Working at Height record means rebooking 14 hours 15 minutes of initial training instead of a 7-and-a-half-hour refresher, and a technician who cannot board until it is done.
WINDA displays the validity of uploaded training records, making the 24-month cycle a useful planning interval for refresher bookings. Medical fitness reviews and site inductions can have different legal or operational cycles and should not be assumed to share the GWO date. Contractors whose people also hold OPITO records should plan for the different four-year and 24-month intervals rather than assuming one record proves the status of another.
BST is the entry level, not the whole system. Basic Technical Training (BTT), currently V11, is the second foundation course: it "prepares participants for further company specific training" in basic mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, bolt-tightening and installation tasks, aimed at candidates with no previous experience of those systems. Its modules run from 4 hours (Hazardous Energies Basic Safety) up to 12 hours 25 minutes (Installation Electrical), with the core Mechanical and Electrical modules at 10 hours 30 minutes and 10 hours 5 minutes respectively. Unlike BST, BTT records do not run on the 24-month cycle — GWO lists only BST, EFA, ART and CoHE as requiring refresher training, and the BTT standard describes its records' validity as enduring.
Two standards extend the emergency-response side. Advanced Rescue Training (ART), currently V6, trains rescue beyond the scope of BST Working at Height across two 12-hour modules — Hub, Spinner and Inside Blade Rescue, and Nacelle, Tower and Basement Rescue — each with a 7-and-a-half-hour refresher on the 24-month cycle, and each requiring valid BST Working at Height, First Aid and Manual Handling records as prerequisites. The remainder of the portfolio is task-specific. Control of Hazardous Energies (CoHE) covers safe work on electrical and pressure-fluid (hydraulic) energy systems and carries the 24-month refresher requirement. Alongside it sit Blade Repair, three lifting-related standards — Slinger Signaller, Crane and Hoist, and Service Lift — plus High Voltage, Wind Limited Access for personnel who visit but do not maintain turbines, the Instructor Qualification Training standard for the trainers themselves, and an Entry Level Wind Technician Framework. Updated versions of the ART, Blade Repair, BST, BTT, CoHE, EFA, IQT and Wind Limited Access standards all took effect on 10 March 2026, with the same grace period to 10 September 2026 — worth checking before booking against an older course description.

WINDA is GWO's normal verification channel. A WINDA ID is a unique system-generated identifier, and a participant must create a profile before a certified provider can upload a completed module against it. GWO's terms are precise: a WINDA training record is not itself an official document, but a digital representation of the original record maintained by the training provider.
An employer with a WINDA organisation profile can use a participant's ID, with the required permission, to view current records. A printed WINDA copy is not valid as a stand-alone certificate, and training completed before 17 October 2016 is not available there and must be evidenced by the provider-issued certificate. WINDA makes verification and expiry planning easier, but its accuracy still depends on correct provider uploads; identity, module version, site requirements and any revoked or exceptional records must also be checked.
Three boundaries are worth stating, because contract clauses and job adverts routinely blur them. First, GWO training is an industry standard, not government regulation. The standards are agreed by GWO's member companies and recommended for renewable energy technicians; how they map onto national health-and-safety law varies by jurisdiction, and it is the employer or site operator — not GWO — who decides which records a given site requires. Most offshore wind operators specify GWO training contractually, but the matrix differs between sites, so the site's own requirements are always the reference.
Second, GWO does not generally mandate a medical examination before BST. Its Requirements for Training use a Medical Assessment Form and require participants to be medically fit, well-rested and capable of participating; uncertainty about safe participation must be addressed before physically demanding exercises continue. OPITO BOSIET uses a different entry process but can also accept a training-centre medical screening form as an alternative to specified current medical certificates, so neither course necessarily proves that a doctor examined the participant. A WINDA record is evidence of training, not offshore work fitness; that separate assessment is set by the employer, operator and applicable national or flag-state rules.
Third, no one is "GWO accredited" by taking a course, and GWO trains no one directly. Training is delivered by GWO certified training providers audited against the standards; participants hold training records; and service providers of any other kind — medical, logistics, marine — are simply third parties working alongside the system. Precision here matters when reviewing tenders and CVs: the meaningful claims are a certified training provider status that can be checked with GWO, and individual WINDA records that can be checked in the database.
GWO's portfolio addresses physical hazards such as falls, fire, crush and immersion, while its first aid modules cover acute illness as well as injury. Those modules train first aiders, not clinicians: BST First Aid teaches participants to recognise their limitations and call for help, and EFA V6 says delivery must be supported by company or national arrangements ensuring medical teleconsultation. This calls for a credible escalation route, not necessarily a private provider or referral of every minor case; depending on jurisdiction and context, the arrangement may be public, national, internal, shipboard while aboard or contracted.
G+ incident data found an even split between reported injury and illness among cases needing medical intervention, across ailments too broad for a volunteer to identify and treat confidently. A first aider can recognise red flags, perform structured assessment and act within training, but remote consultation cannot always diagnose chest pain or exclude serious disease without examination and tests. The emergency response plan should therefore connect first aid to professional advice, rescue and physical assessment when escalation criteria are met, without implying that every medical question can be completed online.
